Positions on the etha+ project

Positions of the major players in Switzerland

Federal services

Federal services now recognise the huge potential of the Alcosuisse project to use biomass to produce energy and reduce CO2 emissions. With regard to biofuels, the debate about them competing with food is also a hot issue in the federal administration. The Federal Government is placing great hopes on second generation bioethanol. In the meantime, it is worth mentioning that the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), in its CO2 savings scenarios, has already included the 5% ethanol blend in its base case calculations for fuel. The Directorate General of Customs has worked with Alcosuisse to determine concrete ways in which the Law can encourage biofuels.

Swiss Farmers' Union (SFU)

While giving firm priority to food crops in Swiss agricultural production, the SFU supports biofuels, particularly from the point of view of market diversification and farmers’ participation in sustainable development. The SFU has also helped establish the domestic production of biofuels by supporting the creation of favourable conditions.

Swiss Petroleum Union (SPU) and the Climate Cent Foundation

The SPU is encouraging its members to support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using biofuels. Several of its members are working with Alcosuisse to distribute ethanol.

Touring Club of Switzerland (TCS)

This non-profit-making association, with over 1.4 million members, is interested in principle, and is in favour of introducing this type of fuel. It is also considers it important to concentrate on the product that maximizes environmental benefits, and to carry out practical road tests. The tests on E85 are conclusive.
