Feedstocks

Feedstocks used by first generation bioethanol production techniques are:

  • beet molasses (by-product of sugar production)  
  • syrup from sugar production  
  • downgraded potatoes  
  • downgraded cereals and those from mills  
  • whey  
  • fruit juices (non-marketed fruits)  
  • products from agricultural sectors in difficulty

Characteristics:

  • immediate availability  
  • little direct competition with the food supply chain  
  • utilisation of agricultural surpluses 
  • utilisation of co-products for on-site production of energy or animal feed.

Feedstocks used by second generation technologies:

  • dedicated agricultural production (miscanthus, grass, etc.)
  •  agricultural production wastes (straw, leaves, husks, etc.)
  • dedicated forestry production (wood) forestry and wood industry wastes (branches, sawdust, etc.)
  • other wood residues, green wastes, part of household waste, etc.
