What is E85?
E85 is a fuel made up of 15% petrol and 85% bioethanol. Its main advantages are that it emits only one quarter of the CO2 produced by ordinary petrol, and it is made from renewable resources. It also enables the recycling of vegetable wastes (agricultural and forestry) and offers a market for declassified agricultural products (potatoes, grasses, beetroot, etc.). So in the long term it could provide an interesting outlet for Swiss agriculture (or even specialised production).
Unlike essEnce5, which is suitable for all vehicles, E85 requires a flexi-fuel vehicle (FFV). These cars, also called "dual fuel vehicles", can run on both conventional petrol and E85 with only one tank. In countries such as Sweden and Brazil, the various types of FFVs already make up an important part of the car population. These vehicles are now available on the Swiss market.
Apart from FFVs, some garages will modify your car to enable it to run on E85. This involves fitting a special kit to regulate the injection according to the fuel. However, the alteration is not guaranteed by carbuilders.
