Biofuels today
By "biofuels", we mean any fuel obtained from biomass. Biofuels can replace the main fossil fuels: ethanol for petrol, biodiesel for diesel, and biogas for natural gas.
They have the following advantages:
- renewable source of energy
- substantially reduce CO2 emissions
- distribution through existing fuel channels
Except for saving measures, no other solution is as effective. Among the biofuels, bioethanol has particular benefits:
- a very wide variety of feedstocks can be used in its production
- very high yields per hectare can be obtained by processing lignocellulosic biomass, either through complete conversion of plants actually used, or by using large plants that are of no interest as food crops.
