Timetable 2004-12

The objective is to deliver the quantity of bioethanol required for the transition of all petrol distributed in Switzerland to essEnce5/essEnce10 and bioethanol 85 by 2010. Alcosuisse will not manufacture bioethanol itself, but will facilitate the setting up of a privately financed manufacturing plant, which could be built next to its existing plant in Delémont.

Key stages

  • 2004-2007: pilot project based on output from the Borregaard plant. This pilot phase also aims to adapt and test blending and distribution systems and procedures
  • Mid-2008: entry into force of the new Law on mineral oil taxation (tax exemption for Swiss or imported sustainable biofuels)
  • End-2008: foreign investor to file for a building permit for a large dehydration unit
  • Early 2009: decision to build a large dehydration unit in Delémont
  • Mid-2009: start of plant construction
  • Mid-2010: start-up of plant operations (pharmaceutical industry and biofuels) and large-scale distribution
  • 2006 - 2010: adaptation of the distribution system in Switzerland
  • 2009-2010: analysis of the possibilities of adding a pilot unit in the plant, to process second generation feedstocks
  • from 2010-2012: Swiss needs of ethanol fully met by domestic and imported products
  • Circa 2012: decision to build a second generation pilot plant capable of processing lignocellulosic biomass.
