This glossary contains the terms and acronyms frequently used in this report.

Atisholz | Today Borregaard. Plant manufacturing cellulose and other products from wood. This plant produces approximately 12 million litres of ethanol a year. |
Barrel | Unit of measurement for crude oil, 1 barrel (bbl) = 159 litres |
Biodiesel | or RME, diesel fuel manufactured from rapeseed oil |
Bioethanol | Ethanol or ethyl alcohol obtained by the fermentation of the sugars in plants (grass, Jerusalem artichokes, sugar beet, cereals, wood, etc.) or in “wastes” (whey, old paper, etc.). |
Bioethanol- fuel | Bioethanol intended for use as fuel. |
Brent | Crude oil from the Brent oilfield in the North Sea |
Carbura | Office central suisse pour l'importation des carburants et combustibles liquides (Swiss central office for the importation of fuels and combustible liquids). |
CEATE | Commission de l’environnement, de l’aménagement du territoire et de l’énergie (Environmental, Town and Country Planning, and Energy Commission) (CN: National Council, CE: Council of States). |
CONCAWE | Oil Companies’ European Organisation for Environment, Health and Safety |
Co-product | Saleable material produced at the same time as bioethanol |
CO 2 | Carbon dioxide, greenhouse gas produced mainly during the combustion of fuels. |
VOC | Volatile organic compound |
DDGS | Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles, a co-product in the manufacture of ethanol from cereals (e.g. wheat, barley, maize), used as a protein feed for animals to replace soya oilcakes, for instance. It consists of grains, which are mixed with concentrated distillery residues (liquors) containing soluble proteins, before being dried. |

diEsel | Mixture of 10% v/v Etha+ with diesel fuel and a solubiliser, for use in non-modified vehicles. This product has not yet been standardised. |
RME | Rape methyl ester (or biodiesel), diesel fuel manufactured from rapeseed oil |
EMPA | Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, research institute specialised particularly in vehicle emission measurements. |
Bonded warehouse | Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, research institute specialised particularly in vehicle emission measurements. |
Non-bonded warehouse | Warehouse for petroleum products already taxed. |
95-octane petrol | Petrol with a research octane number (RON) of 95. This petrol is that most widely marketed. |
Refined petrol | Petrol as a product as it leaves the refinery, before being taxed. |
essEnce 5 | oor bEnzin5 (essEnce5 in the present report), a mixture of 5% v/v of Etha+ with 95-octane petrol, for use in non-modified vehicles. This product corresponds to the Swiss and European standard (EN 228). |
etha+ | Registered trademark of Alcosuisse (trademark registered in Switzerland in October 2002, valid for 10 years) designating bioethanol for use as a fuel when mixed with petrol or diesel fuel. |
ETBE | Ethyl tertiary butyl ether |
EtOH | Ethanol (common abbreviation) |
e85 | Mixture of 85% ethanol with 15% petrol for specific vehicles termed FFV. |
FFV | Flexible Fuel Vehicle. Vehicle that can run on either normal petrol or E85. |
Greenhouse gases | Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N20). |
LCA | Life-cycle analysis or ecobalance. Study aimed at evaluating the global impact of a process, chain or other activity on the environment. |
Wood-cellulose materials | Said of materials containing lignin and cellulose, typically grass, wood, Jerusalem artichoke haulm, etc. |
Million l/year | Million litres a year. |
RM | Raw material. |
MTBE | Methyl tertiary butyl ether. Of fossil origin, MTBE is the main additive used to increase the octane rating of petrol. This product, which can pollute groundwater, will be banned in 16 US states as of 2004. It is just as controversial in Europe. ZAF AG | Sucreries d’Aarberg et de Frauenfeld SA (Aarberg and Frauenfeld sugar refineries) |
% v/v | Volumetric percentage, as opposed to weight percentage (i.e. a mixture of 5% v/v of Etha+ with petrol signifies 5% by volume of Etha+ and 95% by volume of petrol. |
